Lauderhill, Florida, is preparing for one of South Florida’s biggest celebrations of Jamaican culture as reggae icon Marcia Griffiths and dancehall legend Beenie Man headline the city’s 64th Jamaica Independence Celebration on Saturday, August 8, at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Centre.

Hosted by Jamaican-born Mayor Denise Grant and Commissioner John T. Hodgson, the annual event will showcase Jamaica’s rich musical heritage while celebrating the contributions of one of the largest Jamaican communities in the United States.

Mayor Grant emphasized the importance of the celebration to the city and its residents, noting that Lauderhill is home to more than 20,000 Jamaicans, representing approximately 27 percent of the city’s 75,000 residents.

“This celebration is about much more than entertainment,” Mayor Grant said. “It represents our culture, our identity, and the pride of thousands of Jamaicans who continue to honor their heritage while making meaningful contributions to the city of Lauderhill.”

She added that Jamaica’s influence can be felt throughout the community, making the annual Independence celebration a reflection of the city’s diverse identity and Caribbean roots.

Joining Griffiths and Beenie Man on the entertainment lineup are reggae favorites Mikey Spice, Shuga, Empress Uneek, and Mical Rustle, creating an evening that spans generations of Jamaican music.

Guests can expect an upscale theatre-style production featuring live performances, authentic Jamaican cuisine, and a vibrant cultural atmosphere celebrating Jamaica’s Independence.

The festivities will continue beyond the concert, as attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in a special birthday celebration honoring Beenie Man immediately following the show.

The annual celebration has become one of South Florida’s premier Jamaican cultural events, bringing together residents and visitors alike to commemorate Jamaica’s independence through music, food, and community pride.
