The unmistakable rhythm of Soca music is making its way into one of New York City’s most respected cultural institutions. From August 22 through September 12, 2026, the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library will host Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition, an immersive celebration of the life, music, and global influence of Caribbean icon Machel Montano.
Presented in partnership with the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, the exhibition tells the remarkable story of an artist whose career has spanned more than four decades and helped transform Soca from a regional sound into a worldwide cultural movement. Visitors will experience an extraordinary collection of memorabilia, including iconic stage costumes, championship trophies, vinyl records, photographs, lyric books, and rare artifacts documenting Montano’s journey from child prodigy to the internationally recognized “King of Soca.”
The exhibition is about more than one artist. It highlights the enduring influence of Caribbean culture on Brooklyn and the significant role Brooklyn has played in Machel Montano’s own story.
Montano first came to Brooklyn as a young boy through a scholarship program in 1984. Years later, he lived on Utica Avenue, where he recorded one of his breakthrough hits, “Big Truck.” Those early experiences helped shape his career and strengthened his connection to one of the world’s largest Caribbean communities outside the Caribbean.
As Machel Montano explains:
“Brooklyn helped raise me. I lived here, I learned here, and some of my earliest audiences were right in these neighborhoods.”
