Brooklyn officially turned up the celebration for reggae icon Shaggy as Borough President Antonio Reynoso proclaimed May 19, 2026, as “Shaggy Day” in Brooklyn.

The special proclamation was presented by Deputy Borough President Kim Council during “Big Vibes in Little Caribbean: Shaggy’s Album Release,” a community celebration held at the I AM CARIBBEING Headquarters in honor of Shaggy’s 15th studio album, Lottery.
Born Orville Richard Burrell in Jamaica, Shaggy moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn, as a teenager, where he began building the foundation of a legendary music career that would help shape and elevate reggae and dancehall music on the global stage.
With a career spanning more than four decades, the Grammy-winning superstar has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and placed eight hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including fan favorites that helped bring Caribbean music to mainstream audiences around the world.
Beyond his success in music, Shaggy has remained deeply committed to philanthropy and supporting Jamaica and the Caribbean diaspora. Through the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation, launched in 2009, he has organized numerous Shaggy & Friends benefit concerts that have raised millions of dollars for humanitarian and healthcare initiatives.
Most recently, Shaggy played a major role in relief efforts following Hurricane Melissa, helping deliver essential supplies through private flights while also raising more than $500,000 during a star-studded benefit concert at UBS Arena.
“From Kingston to Flatbush, Shaggy is a living legend whose career has transcended borders and made the world move to the rhythms of reggae and dancehall,” Borough President Antonio Reynoso stated. “Through his musical genius and his dedication to philanthropy, Shaggy represents the very best of Brooklyn. That is why I am proud to declare May 19, 2026, as ‘Shaggy Day’ in Brooklyn as we celebrate the next chapter of his incredible career and his decades of spreading joy worldwide.”
