Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley to Receive Honorary Doctorate from UWI

The reggae star will be recognised for his contribution to culture during UWI’s 2026 graduation celebrations.

Jamaican music has another milestone to celebrate. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is set to receive an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from The University of the West Indies, recognising his contribution to culture.

Marley is among 13 honorary graduands announced for 2026. His honour is scheduled to be conferred during the Mona Campus graduation ceremonies, which run from November 5–7, 2026. Read UWI’s official announcement.

For reggae lovers, the recognition celebrates an artist who has developed a distinctive voice while carrying Jamaican music across musical and cultural boundaries. His blend of reggae, dancehall and hip-hop has helped define a career rooted in Jamaican identity and open to global collaboration.

His accomplishments include Grammy victories for Halfway Tree, Welcome to Jamrock and Stony Hill. At the 2006 ceremony, he earned both Best Reggae Album for Welcome to Jamrock and Best Urban/Alternative Performance for its title track—a remarkable double achievement. Marley’s contribution extends beyond his own recordings. UWI highlights his production of The Kalling and his work with brothers Stephen and Julian through Ghetto Youths International, helping develop Jamaican artists for international audiences.
