More than 10,000 proud Guyanese and supporters gathered in Brooklyn on Saturday, June 7, to celebrate Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Anniversary in what organizers are calling one of the largest and most successful Guyanese Independence celebrations ever held in New York City.
The Guyana Independence Celebration Committee New York praised attendees for their outstanding conduct, noting that the event was incident-free, safe, and filled with an overwhelming sense of national pride and unity.
“This was an awesome display of Guyanese love and patriotic fervor that was truly historic,” organizers said in a statement following the celebration. “The parade was historic. The Unity Concert was fire. It was a movie! The Guyanese people were well-behaved, and it was yet again a safe, highly successful event.”
The festivities featured a vibrant Independence Parade followed by a high-energy Unity Concert that brought together members of the Guyanese diaspora from across the tri-state area. Young people were especially recognized for showing up in large numbers and proudly representing Guyanese culture and heritage.
Organizers expressed gratitude to Grand Marshals Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and young Jayden Adrian, as well as Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, New York State Assembly Members Jamie Williams and Monique Chandler Waterman, and New York City Councilmembers Chris Banks and Mercedes Narcisse for joining in the celebration.
A highlight of the parade was the participation of the Guyanese Association of the New York City Corrections Department, whose members energized the crowd as they marched through the streets. The Panamanian Marching Band also delivered an exciting performance that added to the festive atmosphere.
Several community organizations helped elevate the celebration with colorful floats and music trucks, including APNU, WIN, and Sesame Flyers. Their participation provided entertainment for spectators and contributed to the vibrant energy that filled the parade route.
The Committee also extended special thanks to the New York City Police Department for helping ensure the safety and success of the event. Recognition was given to Deputy Inspector Jean Beauvoir, Commanding Officer of the 67th Precinct, Captain Sashanna Wynter, Commanding Officer of the 69th Precinct, and officers from PBBS and other units who worked diligently to maintain order, regulate traffic, and keep attendees safe.
Additional appreciation was extended to the management of 10101 Foster Avenue Realty, LLC, which provided the venue space for the country’s independence celebration. Organizers also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of vendors, artists, performers, musicians, sound engineers, MCs, and production personnel whose hard work created an unforgettable experience for attendees.
The Guyana Independence Celebration Committee concluded by thanking its sponsors, investors, volunteers, staff members, and supporters for helping make the event a resounding success.
“Our hard work yielded unprecedented success. We did it together,” organizers stated. “Whenever we work together in unity and with determination, we are unstoppable. Thank you all.”
As Guyana continues to celebrate 60 years of independence, the record-breaking turnout in Brooklyn demonstrated the strength, pride, and enduring spirit of the Guyanese community abroad.
