More than 10,000 proud Guyanese and their supporters gathered in Brooklyn on Saturday, June 7, 2024. They came together to celebrate Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Anniversary. Organizers are calling it one of the largest and most successful Guyanese Independence events ever held in New York City.
The Guyana Independence Celebration Committee New York praised the attendees. They noted that the event was incident-free, safe, and filled with a powerful sense of national pride and unity.
“This was an awesome display of Guyanese love and patriotic fervor that was truly historic,” organizers said. “The parade was historic. The Unity Concert was fire. It was a movie! The Guyanese people were well-behaved, and it was a safe, highly successful event.”
The festivities included a vibrant Independence Parade. This was followed by a high-energy Unity Concert that connected members of the Guyanese diaspora from across the tri-state area. Young people were especially recognized for their large turnout and their dedication to representing Guyanese culture.
The committee expressed gratitude to the Grand Marshals, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and Jayden Adrian. They also thanked Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with New York officials including Jamie Williams, Monique Chandler Waterman, Chris Banks, and Mercedes Narcisse.
A major highlight was the Guyanese Association of the New York City Corrections Department. They energized the crowd as they marched. Additionally, the Panamanian Marching Band delivered a stellar performance that added to the festive atmosphere.
Several groups helped elevate the celebration with music trucks and floats, including APNU, WIN, and Sesame Flyers. Their contributions provided essential entertainment for the thousands of spectators.
The committee extended special thanks to the New York City Police Department. They thanked Deputy Inspector Jean Beauvoir and Captain Sashanna Wynter for their diligence in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all participants.
Appreciation was also given to 10101 Foster Avenue Realty, LLC for hosting the event. The organizers thanked all vendors, artists, and production staff who worked behind the scenes to create an unforgettable experience.
“Our hard work yielded unprecedented success. We did it together,” organizers stated. “Whenever we work together in unity and with determination, we are unstoppable.”
As Guyana celebrates 60 years of independence, this record-breaking turnout in Brooklyn highlights the enduring strength and pride of the Guyanese community abroad.
